The rising sun flag is the official flag of Japan. It started to be used by merchant ships to identify themselves as Japanese during the Edo period (1600-1868) and it was officially proclamated as the national flag on February 27, 1870 1.
The red circle symbolizes the the sun and it represents the country as "the land of the rising sun".
